Fanfic 24 Shades of Grey, the Two Faces of Kagome.
Prologue
What if the good girl wasn’t who she said she was, what if she wasn’t so innocent, what if it was all a lie, and maybe the spider hanyou wasn’t the one they should fear the most. Those were thoughts that he monk had been having for far longer then he would like to admit, there were times, when their angel of light seemed too much like an angel of death, and she walked a line so fine that even they knew not which side she stood for. Was it possible for their little Kagome to be evil? To harbor such hate and revulsion to their plight that she would lead them to their doom? He didn’t want to think so but there were times, when she was too grey, unable to be so dark that she was black, unable to be so pure that she was white, but perfectly suited to be one that lived in the grey, one that was neither shimmer of light, or shade of darkness.
It was a year ago that he had started to notice the changes, it was raining when she went missing, making her scent hard to trace, so hard in fact that they could not find her tracks even in the mud.
Flashback…
The tachi had been talking while she was at her bath, washing away the proof that they had battled that day hard and long. Bathing her soft skin from the blood of her companions she had come back to hearing them calling her out. ‘Weak.’ was the voice of the monk, ‘Coward.’ was the word the kit used, ‘Pathetic‘ was what the slayer had said, but worst of all was the hanyou, ‘Worthless.’ She wondered that moment how many times had they said such things, how many times had they thought them, and never said a word to her. She was a woman of a peaceful future where demons, oni’s, hanyou’s, and mystic jewels that caused time travel were nothing but myths, a thing of the past. She who was pulled into a labyrinth of legend, she had faired as best she could, or as best as she thought she could without revealing her true self and nature. There were things though, things they didn’t know, things she didn’t want to do ever again, but it seemed that she had learned these things for a reason. And it seemed that what ever her reason for putting that life behind her it was brought back in full force, she would have to go home for a bit, but when she returned they would never say such things again. They would rue the day that they had forced her hand.
She grew angry though, what right did they have to say such things, who were they to say that she didn’t give all, this was their life, not her own, she was both blessed and cursed with the protection of the jewel and they had all sought it for their own greed. There was only one she knew that wanted nothing to do with the magical bauble, Sesshomaru, her only true ally and she could not even count that, for when he was with her, he was just as deadly as any other, so she was alone here. But that was fine. She didn’t bother going back to them that day, didn’t bother to say goodbye, didn’t even look back. The weather had seemed to take on her turbulent dark mood, as gale force winds picked up billowing dark thunderous grey storm clouds. Finding herself in a clearing, the skies opened upon her, water falling like so many part of her life washing it away. Her long thick hair plastered to her body, her white shirt sticking to her skin, allowing her lacy bra to show through. Her ears were sticking out, her cheeks and nose flushed from anger. Her chest heaving as she tried impossibly to calm herself from the hurt, rejection, anger that swirled so hideously in her aura. She preferred to be a being of light, but it was becoming obvious that she was not balanced as she was, that she would have to embrace her darkness to correct her life. Something had to give, something had to break, she couldn’t be one or the other, both was what she was born to be. They had not appreciate this one, and she was unwilling to become the other, so she would become both, and they would have to deal with what they had created, glimmer and shade would be reborn again, Kami have mercy on them, she thought as she made her way to the bone eaters well.
End flashback…
He had felt her change more then he had seen it, though her once round eyes were now narrowed, tapered with something that was not at all pure, they looked like something that was dark and some how light. She didn’t smile as much, and she went off on her own for hours on end, did not respond to any of them, and had often ignored them all. Gone was the childish innocent girl that had fallen down the well, in her place this woman who was still pure but some how not, who was innocent and yet tarnished. She was an oxymoronic being, who no longer spoke unless needed to, and often times, he had wondered if she even needed them anymore.
Many times she would leave for hours, days even if she got a good amount of time without one of them, he hadn’t seen the jewel in some time and that worried him. But some days he could feel it more, as though she were collecting them on her own, as if it were growing. It was her quest really, and if she wanted to she could leave them all, he had figured out what had happened that day when she hadn’t come back to them so long ago. When they finally found her, she was already different, no longer wearing her futuristic garb, but something a kin to miko wear, and yet not. Her breasts nearly bared for the world, as her legs had once been before, but startlingly enough blades attached to her hip. She wore black hamakas, her white kimono top held in a band just below her breasts, which jutted out due to there size, the length of the kimono uncommon, designs, and symbols unknown to them, or anything that they asked about went unanswered. Her body held in leather armored corset, that was also black, and a black choker around her neck. Her hair had once flowed free like a midnight river, billowing in any way the wind took it, now held in a high pony tail that still danced in the breeze.
For the longest after she returned she hadn’t said a word to them, often he had only seen her feelings as she slept, silent tears and sobs raking her body, but if any attempted to comfort her she would only push them away. If looks were enough then they all knew to leave her alone, she had been the glue that held them, and now she simply was. She no longer tried for them, no longer opened up, they had broken something so pure and tainted it with their selfish frustrations. They had tried to apologize, and she had not even batted a lash, turning away and letting their words wash away in the breeze, ‘Hn.‘ was all she had said, she was cold now, no longer the warm ray of life she had once been, no longer white, but becoming grey, ever darker and darker. There were times, times when she would come back to them though, small and trivial times when their Kagome would be there, but she would vanish again as soon as she came, leaving them to feel empty. They wanted to shake since into her, make her turn back into the one they loved, but they could not, they had learned the hard way that her blades were not for show, and that as clumsy as she had once seemed, she was indeed amply adept at using said weapons with lethal accuracy.
Part 1
Kagome stood on a branch in a tall tree looking out at the lands, she was at peace this night, at peace with the work around her, at peace in the waning darkness and the silent birth of a new day. She had left them once again, left them to whatever it is that they did when they were not around her, she didn’t care. She wanted the jewel so she could be done with it, she wanted the spider because he was simply put, her target, the one that held what she needed. Honestly at this point in the game she didn’t care if he lived or died, so long as she got the jewel that was fine. The spider hadn’t crossed her personally, he had only attempted to take the jewel. Once she had it back, he was no longer her concern. Once a while ago she wouldn’t have answered as such, she would have said that they, her tachi and herself would take him down, fight the good fight, but it was foolish for her to attempt to be so pure, for what was light at all if there was no darkness, it was void, empty. Those days were in the past now, her mother had warned her, told her that she couldn’t be a being of light, that it was impossible to be a being a light when there was even a hint of darkness, had told her that she should be herself, and that everything would be fine if only she were herself. She had insisted that she would prove her mother wrong, Sayuri had knowingly given her daughter a shake of her head and a bitter smile, she knew, Kagome would find out the hard way.
Her memories came back to that day, she had been drenched when she climbed out of the well, staggered up the stairs, and walked out into the daylight. Her mood and aura quickly effecting the world around her brining a sudden downpour, she hadn’t remembered how long she’d been in the courtyard when the front door to her home opened and her mother came out to her. Kagome’s face told her everything she needed to know, and she knew if she could time travel her tachi would have the wrath of a mother scorned to deal with, no one messed with Higurashi Sayuri’s young and lived to tell about it. It was days like this that Sayuri cursed that she had fallen in love with Toshiro, her late husband had given her two beautiful children, but his latent spiritual powers had effected their eldest in ways even he couldn’t have known. Her daughters body had been invaded by a cursed jewel and dead spirit of one long since past from this world, pulled into a world where a Halfling, even a powerful one like Kagome could and would be killed just because her father was mortal, and her powers were hard to keep in check. Where her brothers developed with ease, Kagome’s were like a raging inferno that was barely stable, at least when she attempted to be so very pure.
To Sayuri t didn’t matter what the kami thought her daughter was supposed to do, it didn’t matter that there were two hanyou out there that had ruined her daughters happiness, though she would deal that when the time came about. What mattered to her was that those who were supposed to protect her daughter, both physically and mentally had not done so, had allowed her to come home nearly dead to her, her spirit nearly broken. When Sayuri fixed this, she knew the next time the dog hanyou came to the future she would make sure that he knew what darkness truly was, squinting her eyes in anger the elder female figurate pulled her daughter into a tight embrace and flared her daunting aura around her only and always baby girl. Kagome remembered that her had rebuilt her confidence, reformed her soul to a point of fortification that none would be able to do such things to her daughter again, and the Kagome that came back to them was not the girl that had fallen down the well all those months ago.
The sun had risen and hung low in the sky when she had her musings interrupted by her both blades, Tengokushi, and Jigokushi hummed happily, which meant that a being of indifference was coming closer to her proximity, they hummed only for those who held great power, and for them to shake their sheaths this much meant that Sesshomaru was near, more precisely she was in a better ability to see Rin. Despite all that had happened in the world around her, Rin was one being of light that Kagome adored to no end, though dark things had touched her delicate life force, she had risen above the darkness and embraced the light. Kagome could respect her for this so much more then those who cowered in fear of the glimmer or of shade. Looking down she noticed that her tree was rather tall, oddly she didn’t even remember climbing so high the night before, she had just wanted to be closer to the sky, to the stars and the more, to feel the breeze upon her cheeks and weaving in her hair. Kagome sighed and did the unthinkable for a human body, she jumped, her body arched into the jump, gravity taking her fast, the air rushing and growling passed her ears roaring as she went, but all to quickly the grand came, landing in a tight crotch the miko stood and stretched her body out before fanning her aura out in search of the ever stoic being known as Sesshomaru, other wise known as Rin’s beacon.
